Intro

     William of Crail's death left 5 orphaned children, as detailed in the papers about the pay-outs to the widows and children of the fisherman drowned in 1765:
‘ Willliam Runcieman, a widower left 5 children and a Bastard: Janet Runcieman aged 16 Margaret 10 Elizabeth 8, Helen 5 John 3. The Bastard's name Mary aged 16 months.’ (Phyllis adds that this mention of 16 months is a puzzle and may be an error, as later minutes of the Widows and Orphans Fund, consistently identify Mary’s birth as at December 1764, which would make her around 16 weeks old at the time of this letter was written in April 1765).
Grandfather Richard was paid for looking after three of them, Janet presumably considered old enough, at 16, to earn her own keep, Mary, "the Bastard" not his problem, and the two Catherine's assumed to have died young?2,3,4

     Richard Rynsiman was born circa Apr 1701 North Berwick, ELN, SCT, Assumed to be this Richard given the naming pattern of Richard & Jennet's children and the place connections (Dunbar/North Berwick/Whitekirk), although the 1701 baptism at Whitekirk to "John" RYNSIMAN & Jean WHITE, is more likely to William & Jean.3,1,5,6 He was baptized on 13 Apr 1701 at North Berwick, East Lothian; entry reads: John Rynsiman Jean White in this parish had a child baptised named Richard witnesses Richard Richeson & Thomas Olsen?1
     Richard Rynsiman married Jennet Gourlay on 28 Apr 1728 at North Berwick, East Lothian, entry reads: Richard Runchiman and Jennet Gourly both in this parish gave up their names to be proclaimed.7,8
     Richard Rynsiman died bet. 1768 - 1780 ?Dunbar, ELN, SCT; the 1780 end date being based on the assumption that if he had still been alive when grddtr Helen married that he would have been the witness rather than her brother John, and the Dunbar being based on minutes accounting for the payouts to the orphaned children placing Richard back in Dunbar in 1766.9,5,10

Papers held in the National Archives of Scotland detail payments made to "Richard Runcieman" in respect of William's three orphan children (wife Elizabeth had died 1763). By 1768 the children, and presumably Richard, were living in North Berwick.

So which Richard brought up William's orphaned children?
It was highly likely that the Richard being paid to bring up William's orphaned children was some relation, and so it turned out.
A closer reading of the papers by Phyllis, (Oct 2012) clearly states he was their grandfather.2,3,11,12

Which Richard is William of Crail's father?
Tentative id from extant established church registers is the Richard married to Jennet GOURLAY who married in North Berwick (Jennet's parish?) but baptised their children in Whitekirk & Tyninghame - which parish registers do not survive for the time period of interest - although Kirk session records do.
Assuming William was baptized shortly after birth (Mar 1729), this would however mean he married at 19. Not impossible, just a little unusual.
Aiding this id is the marriage of a Helen at Whitekirk in 1768, of an age to be William's daughter.13,9

Names/other info

     In 1728 his surname was recorded as Runchiman and in 1766 as Runcieman.14,10
     It is possible that Richard Rynsiman witnessed the baptism of Thomas Runciman (m. Elspeth KEMP) on 21 Jan 1750 Innerwick, ELN, SCT; Transcript shows: 1749 Jan Thomas Runciman in Thornhill (sp. illegible) & Alison Grieve his spouse had a son baptised named Thomas. Witnesses Richard Runciman & James Go----(illegible) (assuming that Thomas is the son of Robert and Janet Sinclair, Richard might be Thomas' step-brother, I would also guess that Go--- might be Gourlay or similar, and that the place may be Thorntonloch? Two contenders, at least, in the right timeframes exist, Richard married to Jean CLAWSON, Richard married to Jennet GOURLAY.)15,16,17,11
