John Runciman1

(say 1710 - )

BDMs

John Runciman was born say 1710 ?Stirling, STI, SCT, Date assumed from assumed birth of wife. There are no extant options for John's birth in Stirlingshire, but several in Perthshire.2

John Runciman married Katharine Kerr, daughter of Patrick Kerr and Jean Buchanan, on 21 Oct 1743 Stirling, STI, SCT, entry reads: "John Runchiman and Katharine Kerr were married by Mr Ebenezer Erskine."3,4,5
John was a burgess of Stirling, and a gardner in the city, obviously of some note:
Scanned text: The council having considered a petition given into them by Alexander Act in favour Brymer, present deacon, John Runciman and John Harlay, overseers, and gardners Thomas Thomson, present boxmaster of the society of gardiners in and about the town of Stirling, for themselves and in name of the other members of the said society, and as authorised by them conform to an act the eighth of June current, craving the sanction of the town council to their meetings aad annual elections, so as the same might not be lookt upon as contrary to law and unwarrantable, for the reasons at length sett forth in the petition ; the council having deliberate on the petition, and judging nothing thereby craved to be contrair law or reason, do therefore grant the desire of the petition and appoint the clerk to give the petitioners an extract of this act and of the Petition given in for their warrand."

One of his grandsons was a surgeon in the Royal Navy, another an ironmonger and seedsman in Stirling.1,6,7,8

Names/other info

In 1744 his surname was recorded as Runshiman this being the earliest record so far found for John. It is used in 1744 for the baptism of daughter Janet, and again in 1759 for daughter Katherine.9,10 By 1747 John's surname was recorded as Runchiman for the baptism of daughter Isobel, and also in 1767 for daughter Jean.11 In 1748 his surname was recorded as Runsman.12 Runshman appears in the baptism of son Patrick.13 And for a bit of variety, in 1753 the parish clerk decided to record him as Runsyman.14 1755 and 1763 records show his surname as Runceman.2,15

Summary

DNA: It currently seems unlikely that we will find a direct male line Y-DNA candidate for the RUNCIMAN DNA project to dis/prove any connections to other lines, but possibly there are descendants around who might consider a FamilyFinder test to see what connections that shows.16
