     John Runciman was born on 6 Feb 1838 Dirleton, ELN, SCT.1,2
     John Runciman died on 3 Nov 1860 8 Margaret St, Glasgow, LKS, SCT, at age 22; cert. shows John as 22, single, cap warehouseman, s/o Charles RUNCIMAN, farmer, dec'd, and Isabella m.s. WHITE; d. 10am of consumption 6 mos; bur. Sighthill Cem., Glasgow; Inf. brother Charles, present; Reg. 8th.1,3
Scotland and Beyond shows this John as married Q3 1868 to Rebecca DRYDEN, then a Margaret.
Further investigations showed that Margaret was Rebecca's sister, and that it was more likely that the John married to these sisters was the son of Thomas & Alison (CURRIE) RUNCIMAN. So the marriage cert. subsequently proved.
Some trees have John as dying in 1868. As this wasn't in Scotland or England as far as I can currently determine, it is possible that this is a misinput into a database from Scotland and Beyond where the 3-1868 marriage has been interpreted as his year of death.
John's death cert. has also now subsequently been found, fully confirming the conclusions above.4,5,6,7,3

Census

     John Runciman appeared on the census of 1841 Dirleton, ELN, SCT, in the household of Charles Runciman and Isabella Dick Runciman and is assumed to be a son.8
     The census of 1851 showed John and David and their sister Margaret in the household of their parents Charles and Isabella Dick Runciman Catfield, Par. of Dirleton, ELN, SCT, enumerated as RUNCIMAN: Charles 54 general lab & carter b N Berwick, HAD; wife Isabella 52 b Gladsmuir, HAD; Children: Margaret 24 dressmaker, John 13 , David 10 scholars b Dirleton, HAD.1
